Welcome to the video blog of the Custodians of the Woodland. Over the weekend in the heart of Derbyshire, we have been planting trees and saplings in the woodland.

This video was unscripted and off the cuff and came out very well.

We filmed this over a couple of weekends whilst friends and family helped in planting the trees.

He who plants trees upon his paternal estate, repays a debt to his posterity which he owes to his ancestors. Proverb

The trees planted can be viewed here

We have not planted the saplings to populate the woodland densely, but we know all too well not all the saplings will survive. Even checking on the saplings, this morning, one has been pulled up either by a human or animal. The sapling was found and planted with love again.

The two expenses of such a plantation are preparing the soil and the cost of the seedlings. I’m so glad I contacted EForests, who donated the saplings to us.
The soil and the compost were formulated to work well with the soil type already there.

It will take several centuries for the saplings to make up a mature forest to flourish! If we let nature do its work, first annuals, then perennials will colonize the abandoned soil. Then, gradually, pioneer shrubs and trees will come; the trees that make up a mature forest only find favorable conditions for their development after several decades: soil preparation and the saplings planted artificially to restore good conditions for the growth of these late species.

I’m all for re-wilding, but I’m in favor of giving a helping hand.

“The true meaning of life is to plant trees, under whose shade you do not expect to sit.”

Nelson Henderson
